![]() The 22-year-old showed promise in his limited at-bats, hitting. 273/.382/.481 with 11 homers in Triple-A Worcester during the 2022 season, Casas made his major league debut. Selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2018 draft (26th overall), Casas profiles as an above-average hitter who peppers the ball across the entire field. Starting with the obvious candidate to earn the bulk of playing time in Boston next season, September call-up Triston Casas. ![]() ![]() As free agency progresses, it’s plausible that at least one of these players loses their spot on the roster before Spring Training. Currently, the Red Sox have four first basemen on their 40-Man roster: rookie Triston Casas, former top-prospect Bobby Dalbec, 1B/OF Franchy Cordero, and veteran Eric Hosmer. 266/.366/.560 line during the second half of the season following the mid-season acquisition of slugger Kyle Schwarber (.291/.435/.522) and the seeming breakout of Bobby Dalbec (.269/.344/.611).Īs discussed in MLBTR’s Offseason Outlook, Boston faces an interesting decision as the team looks to return to playoff contention in 2023. This came only a year after Boston’s first basemen slashed a respectable. 210/.294/.369 slash line that ranked third-lowest in batting average, sixth-lowest in on-base percentage, seventh-lowest in slugging percentage, and resulted in wRC+ of 85, the fourth-lowest league-wide. With four different players having at least 50 at-bats at the position, Boston struggled to a collective. One key area of criticism for the team was their production at first base. But neither player was on the move, which should help Boston remain in the race for that final wild card spot.Following an unexpected 2021 run that nearly culminated in a World Series berth, the Red Sox found themselves watching this year’s playoffs at home after finishing at the bottom of the AL East. The left side of the infield was expected to stay intact through the deadline, but it wasn't clear if Eovaldi or Martinez might get sent out, considering their deals expire at the end of the year. Both players are 22 years old, and both players have played at the high-A level this year. Max Ferguson was the 11th-ranked prospect in the Padres' system, and Rosier was ranked 26th. These two prospects came attached in the Eric Hosmer deal. 328 with a 1.016 in the two levels in 2022. Valdez has had a good season at Double-A and Triple-A this year, hitting. The Red Sox got two prospects from the Astros in exchange for Vazquez, neither of whom was highly ranked in the Houston organization. 646 OPS, and his numbers are even lower this year. He's underwhelming offensively, as a career. The 27-year-old has started 153 games behind the plate in the big leagues for the Blue Jays and White Sox. ![]() The Red Sox needed a catcher after trading away Christian Vazquez, and McGuire can fill that spot. The 34-year-old came cheap, as the Red Sox will be sending a player to be named later to Cincinnati to complete the deal. Tommy Pham is most known these days for slapping Joc Pederson during a batting practice altercation - a fight which was based on an old fantasy football dispute. The Padres are also paying a ton of money for the Red Sox to take Hosmer. 727 OPS this season won't turn any heads, but it still makes him one of the better hitters in the Red Sox' lineup. Hosmer's far removed from his All-Star season in 2016, but he's a four-time Gold Glove winner at first base, and he'll provide the Red Sox with some desperately needed defense and stability at the position. In terms of big league upgrades, this one marked the Red Sox as borderline buyers. In fact, the 23-year-old never even reached the Triple-A level until a few weeks ago. But his career hasn't panned out, and he's yet to pitch in the big leagues. The lefty was once a tremendously hyped prospect in the Red Sox' system, after he was drafted with the 12th overall pick in 2016.
